A lovely and elegant handcrafted winter accessory, this will always be cherished for its soft warmth and versatility. The extreme cold winters of Himachal have necessitated wool weaving that has evolved into distinct craft forms for each of these states. The extremely soft and warm Angora wool comes from the Angora rabbit. The wool is sheared from the animal, the yarn is mixed with wool at home, and then woven by members, mostly women of the Bhotia community living at high altitudes of close to 7000 feet in Uttarakhand, for whom this has become a primary source of livelihood. The yarn has an incredibly soft and silky texture and is extremely sought after by connoisseurs of warmth. Given its ultra-fine character, the Angora fibre has to be woven with Merino wool in order to impart more strength to the Angora fibre to withstand the friction and cohesion among the fibres while spinning. Wool is obtained from migratory mountain goats, angora rabbits, and sheep bred in farms.
